MRL Youth Coordinator Named to Jefferson Cup Committee
Massanutten Regional Library’s Youth Services Coordinator, Claire Covington, has been named to the Jefferson Cup Committee for the Virginia Library Association. Covington represents Region 6 of the Virginia Library Association and is one of ten members of the committee.
The Jefferson Cup honors two distinguished biographies, historical fiction or American history books for young people. Presented since 1983, the Jefferson Cup Committee’s goal is to promote reading about America’s past, to encourage the quality writing of United States history, biography and historical fiction for young people and to recognize authors in these disciplines.
Members of the Jefferson Cup Committee must be members of the Virginia Library Association and have knowledge of children’s books or literature. Members are required to attend committee meetings, read and evaluate some 200 titles of nominated books, and present programs at the Virginia Library Association (VLA) and Virginia Educational Media Association (VEMA) conferences.
Covington is an undergraduate of Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg and holds a Masters Degree in Library and Informational Sciences from the University of South Carolina. She is currently working to obtain a certificate of Graduate Studies in School Library Media. She was the recipient of the 2012 Virginia Library Association Scholarship.
“I am thrilled to be a part of this committee. It is always a joy to help promote reading about America’s history and to encourage the talents of all the amazing authors out there,” says Covington of her newly appointed honor.
