Library Friends Kick-Off Party Tuesday, February 19

2/5/2013
Massanutten Regional Library Main Branch, Downtown Harrisonburg, has announced its kick-off party for recruiting volunteers for its Library Friends Organization.

A kick-off party will be held Tuesday, February 19, 7-8 pm.  Members of the Friends of the Staunton Public Library, some 200 members strong and a group which has gained recognition from the State Library Association, will be guest speakers and offer advice and answer questions  about its successful group.

“Our goal is to recruit new members for Massanutten Regional Library’s existing group, but it is not out of the question that a new group could also be formed,” says Cheryl Griffith, Community Relations Manager for the library system. “The Friends of  the Library can plan programs of an academic or musical nature, fundraise for the library, form book clubs—basically anything members want to be involved.  The ultimate goal is to help and assist the library, stimulate community interest in the library, and support Massanutten Regional Library and its staff through fundraising and advocacy efforts, and to assist with programming.  We know we have lots of library patrons who like and respect what we offer, so why not offer these patrons a group where they can socialize and simultaneously assist the library?”

While potential Friend recruitment is a key component to the meeting, Griffith says the meeting could be beneficial to members of community organizations to get new ideas for volunteer recruitment and project ideas.

“Our programming is always free and open to the public,” says Griffith.  “So we don’t want to limit the meeting to potential library volunteers.  One of its most popular programs the Friends sponsor at Staunton Public Library is “A Little Lunch Music.”  Yet this group can advise on how to manage its volunteers, lobby Richmond for more library funding, and fundraise.  This group has a lot of advice to offer.  We want to share the wealth with what this group can advise.”

It is recommended that individuals or groups who are interested in attending the February 19 meeting reserve a spot by calling 434.4475, ext. 121 before the February 19 date.  Individuals who are interested in becoming Friends members of Massanutten Regional Library can also pick up a survey and brochure at MRL Main during its normal operating hours.
