Harrisonburg Mayor to Sign Library Proclamation
Massanutten Regional Library will be spending the entire week of October 21-27, 2012, celebrating its Friends of the Library groups as part of the sixth annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week. MRL has two active Friends organizations in Harrisonburg and Broadway.
Harrisonburg City Mayor Richard Baugh will be on hand at Massanutten Regional Library Main Branch Wednesday, October 17, 10 am to proclaim the period of October 21-27 National Friends of Library Week.
The Friends of the MRL Main Branch was established in 1998 and its members have voluntarily assisted the library with used book sales and monitoring library programming and events.
The Friends of the Village Library has been in existence since 1975 and recently donated $50,000 for the new facility in Broadway which is slated to open in early 2013.
Currently the Main Branch Friends group is actively recruiting new members to its organization.
“We have a current committee of Friends who want to do the bi-annual book sale only,” says Cheryl Griffith, Community Relations Manager of MRL. “We are undergoing a campaign right now to add members to our already industrious group. We are seeking individuals who may want to assist the library with fundraising and advocacy, plan programs and events, and aid in stimulating community interest to the library. We also want our Friends groups to have fun.”
“MRL staff members are happy for every opportunity to share the great news of the activities and events taking place at the library. We love what we do, and we are thrilled to spread the word! It is affirming when a group of citizen supporters are willing to promote the same message. These Friends play a valuable role in life of the healthy public library systems and make all the difference as advocates both inside and outside the library,” says Lois Jones, Library Director.
